Learning

It is by design that we name the curriculum page on the ACS website “Learning”. Our intention is to state clearly that our curriculum is focused on student learning. The content of the ACS curriculum is built with the student in mind. It is designed around an articulated set of standards that states what the student should know and be able to do at the end of his/her learning passage at our school. These standards are adopted from the AERO (American Education Reaches Out) curriculum sponsored by the U.S. State Department Office of Overseas Schools, aligned with American Common Core, and adapted by committees of overseas faculty and administrators to meet the needs of international schools and their students.

The process of adopting this curriculum is also focused on learning. ACS has a regular cycle of curricular review where, every 5 years, a subject area undergoes a complete review and revision process. The main goal of this process is to ensure alignment of the curriculum across divisions, thus providing a smooth learning journey and seamless transition for our students from one level to another.

As to the process of implementation, the school engages the faculty in ongoing learning and professional growth. ACS believes that the students’ learning advances through creating a community of professionals and committing to support the learning and growth of this community. To ensure success, we are constantly looking for evidence of learning. Various types of assessments are used to monitor the implementation of our curriculum. Both internal and external data is collected and used to inform instruction and make curriculum-related decisions.

It is through this focus on the content, process, and evidence of student learning that we live up to our beliefs. We believe that only through the establishment and deliberate review of high standards for our students and ourselves can we achieve our goals.
