Family and friends were invited by the students in the middle school to view their poetry works. The evening started out in the Upper School Library with a mixed-media and traditional poetry exposition. Students were encouraged to display their poems or make videos of their work; read their poems with emotion; express their feelings through words, lights, sounds, and other visual aids. And, of course, coffee was served.

Visitors were asked to use ‘focus questions’ to get the students to talk about their work. Questions like ‘What does your poem mean to you?’ and ‘How does the form of your poem impact its meaning?’ It is through these questions that the observers were able to see more of the author’s thoughts and emotions.

Later guests went to the Rabbit Field to listen to select students read their spoken word poems on stage. Overall there were 30 students from the MS that took to the stage. Two students from 6th grade, seven from 7th grade, and 21 students from 8th grade. Throughout the evening, it was obvious that though some students wrote about personal feelings and experiences, others chose to write about social issues or observations, all of them wrote from their hearts.
