ACS Gender Equality Project (GEP) students, community members and various Lebanese activist groups took to the streets during the International Women’s Day (IWD) March. They were advocating for different social and economic issues that affect the women (and men) of Lebanon.
To ensure a greater impact, the students made signs and posters with various equality messages. School Visual Designer Nada Fawaz, created a new GEP banner, and Head of Curriculum Ms. Hanadi Dayyeh arranged to have a community bus available to transport the students and community members to and from the march in Beirut. Ms. Dyane Stillman, GEP Faculty Advisor said “Being a part of this event opened the students' eyes to the number of individuals who are also working for change and made them feel even more motivated and hopeful for future events!”
It wasn’t too far in the past that the GEP at ACS was started. In 2014, Lara Sabra and Naye Idriss (’16) began with a group of students on the basis of a lunchtime discussion group. Their goal was to share the idea that men and women should be equal and not working in opposition to one another. Just recently the class was approved as a prerequisite for Model United Nations and each year there is something new. Currently the group has over 34 members.
