World Arabic Language Day is celebrated on December 18 and the Early Years students were busy celebrating it with the help of older students, staff and faculty, and even some parents. In the lobby of the BD Building under the Christmas tree, the Kindergarteners left a basket full of drawings, illustrating some of the Arabic words that they have learned. Next to their drawings, the word was written in Arabic for them, and on the back of the note, the word and it’s meaning was written for them in English.

Visitors to the BD lobby as well as HS students were asked to select a note from the basket, then read it. In turn for the nice note, they were then asked to write a word or two in Arabic on a note card and put into the basket for the KG students. It became an exciting exchange each day to see what notes and words had been left for the KG students. The process is an excellent way to reinforce the language and build vocabulary for students. One of the teachers remarked “they put their heart and soul into the project and their little hands couldn’t stop drawing after they learned about the occasion.” The students liked the game so much that one of the boys came in with a pencil case full of words that he prepared at home and invited all of his classmates to come and play. If you found a basket of Arabic words and drawings in the BD lobby, what word would you put into the basket?
