A Brief Guide
to Student Services at ACS
The
student services personnel work together in a holistic approach to
provide academic, social/emotional, and health support through both
direct service to students, parents, and teachers indirectly
through the curriculum.
Counseling
Services for Grades 1-12
· Individual and
group counseling regarding issues which interfere with
learning.
· Assessment of
student needs and instituting necessary assistance.
· Monitoring and
follow up of academic improvement plans.
· Maintenance
and organization of advisory and a proactive counseling
program.
· Assistance
with the scheduling and placement of students.
· Parental
support and workshops as necessary.
· Referral to
community specialists when the need arises.
· Maintenance of
relationship with community specialists as needed.
· Counseling
assistance and referrals for members of faculty and
staff.
College
Counseling Services:
· Administration
of a college counseling program starting in grade nine, including
advisement of students on course selection and how a program of
study impacts college goals.
· Guidance of
and advocacy for students and their parents throughout the college
admission process.
· Administration
of an array of interest inventories in the counseling
process.
· Education of
parents on the college application process.
· Development of
student independence in making university choices.
· Information on
summer opportunities that will help students develop and become
aware of their interests.
Academic
Support Services for Grades 1-12
· Remedial
assistance individually or in small groups inside and /or outside
the classroom.
· ELL (English
Language Learning) support for non English speaking or limited
English speaking students in grades 1-8
· Assessment and
screening of referred students to determine areas of strength and
weakness.
Nursing
Services
· Emergency
nursing service for ill or injured students at school.
· Screening,
medical case findings, and referrals related to health problems and
follow-up evaluation.
· Development of
the school health program and school emergency
preparedness.
· Dissemination
of information about communicable diseases in the school and
community as well as identification of safety and health hazards on
school sites.
· Support for
health education according to the school’s health curriculum
(K-12).
· Health
counseling to staff, students and parents.
· Working with
campus food services to ensure healthy nutrition and
hygiene.
THE REFERRAL PROCESS FOR GRADES
1-12
How
do I make a referral for services?
To
refer a student, a complete Student Services Referral
Form must be submitted it to the relevant
Counselor.
Who
can make a referral for services?
Anyone
from within the ACS school community can make a
referral.
What
happens after a referral is received?
The
assigned counselor reviews the file, observes, speaks to the
student, talks to teachers, parents, and others to make
recommendations for intervention and/or referrals. When necessary, a Student/Child
Study Team meeting is called to create an action plan.

CONFIDENTIALITY POLICY
The
content of all counseling sessions is held in the strictest
confidence. The only
exception is when the issue/problem is life threatening (e.g.
suicidal, homicidal), or involving criminal activities.
