ACS Virtual Learning Model
When learning cannot happen on campus, we will provide students with learning at home.
The ACS Virtual Learning Model combines synchronous (real-time) and asynchronous (at any time) learning and provides academic rigor while addressing the age-appropriate social-emotional wellbeing of all of our students.
In the fall of 2019 and the spring of 2020, we learned a great deal from our rapid shift to Virtual Learning during times of school campus closure. Through experimentation, innovation, and collaboration with other schools around the world, we discovered what things work well to support effective learning and student wellbeing and those things that are less effective or problematic. Through seeking regular feedback from students, parents, and teachers, we are now applying the lessons learned to our Virtual Learning Model for 20-21.
ACS Virtual Learning is guided by the following three principles:
- Virtual Learning at ACS is focused on curriculum-related standards and targets. It is a focused experience that ensures the continuity of learning and prioritizes the critical areas in curriculum content in order to meet the learning standards for the grade level.
- Virtual Learning at ACS is rigorous and engaging. Virtual Learning is not intended to replicate the in-person experience, however, it does simulate the in-class experience as far as possible.
- Virtual Learning at ACS focuses on maintaining a sense of community and belonging and is structured in an age-appropriate way that ensures that the health and wellbeing of the child are prioritized.

What is Synchronous Learning?
Synchronous is real-time learning. Both students and teachers are connected through an online platform at the same time. It is like being in class, except both the teacher and students are online.
What is Asynchronous Learning?
Asynchronous is learning that happens at any time. Students access learning through recorded lessons and assigned posts using the school’s online platforms such as Google Classroom, Zoom, Google Meet, and SeeSaw.
What are the VL expectations for students?
Our expectations of engaging and completing assignments are the same, whether online or in classes. Online assignments are given a time frame and structure to complete, support is given for those who need assistance in learning, and due dates are to be met.
What are the VL expectations for parents?
Families are expected to create the needed environment for their children to participate and engage with our teachers and online learning platforms. Divisional Principals share specific guidelines and advice for parents on how to best support learning at home.
What schedule do students follow in VL?
When school closure is announced, students will receive emails from Divisional Principals informing them about their schedules and other related topics.
Who announces campus closure and the shift to the VL model?
The announcement of campus closure comes from the Head of the School office. Divisional communication, including schedules, learning updates, and other important information follows from the Divisional Principals.
Will the school make up for Virtual Learning days?
Virtual Learning days are considered school days, therefore there is no need to make up for these days.
What is the difference between Virtual Learning and Blended Learning?
Blended Learning is when some parts of the teaching and learning happen face-to-face in school, and other parts happen online, either synchronously or asynchronously. Virtual Learning is when the entire educational experience takes place fully online.
